Minimum Age for Gorilla Trekking

Minimum Age for Gorilla Trekking Rwanda & Uganda (15 Years):

If you are planning a gorilla trekking adventure in Uganda or Rwanda, it’s important to know that the minimum age for gorilla trekking is 15 years old.

This rule applies universally to ensure both the safety of the gorilla trekkers and the well-being of the mountain gorillas. But why exactly are younger travellers not allowed to participate in this incredible experience?

Why Children Under 15 Are Not Allowed to Trek?

Before hating the fact that your children wont be allowed to gorilla trekking experience, it’s important to understand why the minimum age limit is set at 15. Below are some key reasons why children under 15 are not allowed to join the trek:

  1. Physical Challenges;
    Gorilla trekking involves hiking through dense forests and climbing steep hills to find the gorillas. This can be physically demanding, even for adults. Younger individuals may not have the strength or stamina needed to handle the long walks, slippery paths, or sudden changes in weather. Trekking in mountainous areas requires a certain level of fitness, and children under 15 might struggle to keep up.
  2. Health Risks;
    Forests are home to a variety of wildlife, plants, and insects that can carry diseases. Young children may have weaker immune systems and could be more prone to infections or allergic reactions in such environments. Protecting both the children and the wildlife from disease is a major concern.
  3. Understanding Instructions;
    During a trek, rangers give important instructions to ensure safety. It’s crucial that everyone follows these guidelines, especially when approaching the gorillas. Younger children might find it difficult to fully understand or remember these instructions, which could lead to risky situations.
  4. Fear or Overreaction;
    Mountain gorillas are large and powerful animals. While they are generally peaceful, their sheer size can be intimidating. Younger individuals might get scared, panic, or behave unpredictably in the presence of the gorillas. Any sudden movements or loud noises could disturb the animals, creating a potentially dangerous situation.
  5. Temptation to Play;
    Children often want to play, and if they see a baby gorilla, they might feel the urge to interact. However, gorillas are wild animals, and any attempt to play with them could be seen as a threat by adult gorillas, leading to dangerous encounters.

Exceptions for Younger Trekkers in Uganda;

While the standard age limit for gorilla trekking is 15, Uganda makes exceptions for children as young as 12. If you’re traveling with a child who is under 15 but at least 12 years old, there is a chance they can trek, but certain conditions must be met:

  • The child must be accompanied by a parent or guardian who knows them well and can ensure their safety.
  • You will need to write a letter to the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) requesting permission for your child to join the trek. In this letter, it’s important to explain that your child is physically fit, of reasonable height and size, and able to follow instructions given by the park rangers.
  • Your child must also trek alongside an elder who understands them, to help ensure the experience goes smoothly.

If UWA grants permission, your child will be allowed to join the adventure and witness the beauty of mountain gorillas in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park or Mgahinga.

Gorilla Permit Costs and Requirements;

To participate in a gorilla trek, everyone must obtain a gorilla permit. The cost of the permit varies depending on where you are from:

  • USD 800 for foreign visitors,
  • USD 700 for foreign residents,
  • USD 500 for all Africans, and
  • UGX 300,000 for East African residents.

Each traveler is required to carry identification on the day of the trek. For children between the ages of 12 and 14, their ID or Passport must be accompanied by the authorization letter from UWA that allows them to participate in the trek.

In summary, while gorilla trekking is an unforgettable experience, the age limit is in place for good reasons. If you’re planning to bring along a younger traveler, make sure to follow the guidelines and seek permission to ensure a safe and enjoyable adventure for everyone.
