Bwindi is the home of almost a half of the mountain gorillas left in the whole world making it the homeland of the awesome mighty and amazing creatures, the Mountain Gorillas.
It is located in the southwestern part of Uganda at the edge of the western rift valley, it’s called impenetrable because of its incredibly thick trees that are really so dump, the forest is always so cold and at most times it’s always so misty in the interior and features almost over 400 different tree species.
The predominant influence of Bwindi safaris is Mountain Gorilla trekking and it is the leading activity that generates more income in the tourism industry of Uganda.
The forest hosts gorilla groups that can literally be tracked with over 120 mammals such as baboons, chimpanzees etc. On your Gorilla trekking safari you must choose a best trekking company that will make your safari an adventure to remember.
The topography of this forest is awesomely rugged with steep hills and the highest elevation is called Rwamunyonyi Hill, Though trekking is done all year round most people prefer it during the months of June to September and December to February when the nation experiences dry seasons since its so cold in Bwindi so it makes life a lot easier.

Mountain gorilla trekking or tracking is done in 3 African countries; Rwanda in Volcanoes National park, Democratic Republic of Congo in Virunga National park and Uganda in Mgahinga Gorilla National park and Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park.
In Uganda, the Gorilla Permit costs $700. Rwanda gorilla permit is priced at $1,500. D.R. Congo gorilla trekking permit is at $400
The worthiness of a gorilla tracking safari is associated with the task of conserving the nearly extinct creatures and the contribution to the development of communities around the tracking sites. It is worth to note that, the activity is amazingly a memorable experience you not miss.
The minimum age for a person willing to trek mountain gorilla in the 3 countries is 15. But, on request, individuals below but close to 15 years of age can track these gentle giants. This is done after an official letter of approval of a responsible body.
The best time is during the dry seasons between July to September and December to February. The hiking trails tend to be dry during these periods. This is the high season in tourism sector.
Note: The gorilla trekking parks are open all year round and welcome visitors. You need to book your gorilla permit in 3 month advance if you are to track in high season.
The low season usually March to June and October to November tend to have discounted permits and low accommodation fares.
The distance from Kampala city to Bwindi Forest is approximately 550 km. And the drive time is about 8 hours via Masaka.
Anyone sane above 15 years of age, physically fit to hike into high altitudes (or hire porters), with a valid ID, without communicable diseases such as flu, and must posses a gorilla tracking permit.
Bwindi is in the southwestern part of Uganda. If reached from Queen Elizabeth National Park it takes approximately 2-3 hours depending on the speed and from Lake Mburo NP 4-6 hours. If coming straight from Entebbe or Kampala, the trip by road will take about 9 to 10 hours. During the rainy season, travel by 4WD vehicle is necessary. Bwindi Impenetrable Forest can also be reached by chartered flight from where you will enter the country Entebbe Airport. It is about 46 km from the capital city of Kampala. It is possibly to fly by domestic carrier from Entebbe or Kampala (kajjansi Airfield) to Kisoro and it takes about 1 and hours to reach the forest.
